Special Forces leadership lessons

As corporate leaders learn how to increase the effectiveness and professionalism of their staff, they can learn a lot from special forces.

I had the opportunity to cooperate with special forces soldiers, and I will undoubtedly remember this experience forever. It’s somewhere deep inside me.

I am a fan of special forces and, while searching for inspiration for redefining the work culture and changes in leadership, I knew that those types of soldiers could be a good example to follow.

Of course, the world of business is different from the military world, but there are some easily identifiable similarities.

Teamwork is key.

A mission cannot be successfully completed unless the team functions as one organism. The idea of placing emphasis on teamwork is also very relevant to the everyday struggles of the business world.

Never sacrifice anybody.

As a leader, let the glory reach the members of your team and try to protect them from criticism. If you need to speak to an employee about a mistake they have made, do it behind closed doors.

Never leave anybody without support.

Make the team believe that every single one of them is just as important as they all are together. Celebrate success together. Do not blame anyone for their failures. Each time you succeed in something, publicly thank the ones at the lower levels for their contribution to teamwork.

Loyalty to the team is essential.

Both loyalty and trust in loyalty are unfortunately rare sights among business leaders. As leaders, we are obliged to responsibly employ and are responsible for the ones we have employed.

Try to be as honest with your workers as you can, and never lie to them. Loyalty is based on trust. If your people do not believe in your honesty, they will not believe that you will support them either.

Difficult moments help us adapt more quickly.

A young managing team experiencing difficult moments should learn to appreciate them – those times will not only empower them but also train them to successfully lead their own staff in this extremely competitive realm of business.

Ensure that you support your employees, no matter what.

Don’t turn your back on them. If they don’t succeed or if something goes wrong, help them correct their mistake and always be loyal to them. If you see someone having a bad day and whose attitude is influencing others, take 5 minutes to help them. Tell them that you appreciate them and that their contribution to the team is valuable.

There are no poor teams, there are only poor leaders.

Charismatic leadership is contagious. Charismatic leaders change others and their capacity to act. They create a culture of teamwork and responsibility, the culture of success and working towards a goal. Such an attitude will, sooner or later, affect everyone. Mutual responsibility means that each member of the team expects the highest levels of productivity from the others; everyone knows what to do to reach the goal.

Leadership is the most important factor for the productivity of every team.

The success or failure of a team depends on the leader. The attitude of the leader sets the tone for the work of the whole team, and it is the leader who should care for the productivity of the whole team.

Don’t let your ego control you.

Leaders value the team’s mission more than personal needs and “feeding” their ego. Leaders are humble. They accept the best ideas, even if they come from lower-level workers. Leaders take full responsibility for their mistakes.

Ego warps and destroys everything: the planning process, the ability to take good advice, and the capacity for accepting constructive criticism.
