How incompetent leaders destroy teams

How Leaders Kill Their Teams:

1. Unwilling To Receive Candid Feedback 

When you start avoiding feedback because you may hear what you don’t want to hear or something that will hurt you, you leave yourself open to failure. Employees will also stop giving feedback when they observe that the Leadership Destroyer is not ready to receive feedback, and when they stop giving feedback, the Leadership Destroyers accumulate on an island. Islands are great for vacation but not so great when trying to lead a group of people to get the most out of them.

 

2. Micromanage

I've yet to see a person who likes being micromanaged. It is highly demotivating, demoralizing, and frustrating, and for reasons I can’t seem to understand, some employers still do this. It can be tough dealing with a controlling boss who doesn’t trust you, but what if you do the micromanaging?

The signs are clear, but just like almost all micromanagers, you may not be able to see them. For example:

You are never satisfied with deliverables.

The fact that you would have gone about the task differently leaves you frustrated.

Focus on the minute details to make yourself feel better, or you will feel pain having to make such corrections.

You always want to know the location and activity of all your team members.

You always demand that they give you updates on where things stand

You always want all emails to cc you.

 

3. Talk But Don’t Listen:

No one can respond, offer their opinion, or even get a word in whenever you are talking. They always want to speak alone and never listen. People gradually stop making contributions when they know they are never heard. Just stop talking and listen for a change.

 

4. Focused On Pleasing The Boss

Performing for your boss and organization is okay, but the leadership of Destroyer takes it to a whole different level. They will do all they can to look good, even to the organization's detriment. “What will the boss say?” consumes the moment; the team is destroyed.
